  • Author: Karen Colman
  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This traditional bread pudding is rich, creamy, and golden on top—made from simple pantry ingredients and leftover bread. It’s the perfect comforting dessert for family gatherings, holidays, or cozy nights in. Every bite is filled with warm cinnamon, velvety custard, and a hint of vanilla. Make it ahead and enjoy warm or chilled with a drizzle of cream or a scoop of ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups stale French bread, cubed

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 4 large eggs, beaten

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (plus extra for greasing dish)

  • ½ cup raisins or chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss bread cubes with melted butter until coated.

  3. In another bowl, whisk together milk, cream, eggs, both sugars, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt until smooth.

  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes in the baking dish. Gently press down so bread absorbs the liquid. Let sit for 10 minutes.

  5. Bake for 40–45 minutes until the top is golden and the center is just set.

  6. Cool slightly and serve warm. Add whipped cream, caramel, or ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute French bread with brioche, challah, or sourdough for different textures.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or your favorite spice.
  • Let it chill overnight and reheat in the oven for an even more flavorful experience.
